While February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month on our calendars, we believe it should be celebrated and acknowledged each and every day of the year. After all, Black history is American history.
We are thankful for the accomplishments and efforts made by Black agriculturalists, environmentalists, innovators, and creatives across the world. And today, we’d like to celebrate some of the amazing Black folx that make up our community here in our hometown of Detroit.
Detroiters Inspiring Us Jessica Nabongo of @thecatchmeifyoucan Meet the world traveler, writer, and entrepreneur behind The Catch Me If You Can, The Catch, and Jet Black. She’s the first black woman to have traveled to every country in the world (yes, you read that right), she’s landed in Detroit, and she just so happens to be a plant mom too! Andrea Williams of @paisleypaperco This Detroiter is the designer behind Andrea Designs Studio and the greeting card, paper goods, and apparel company Paisley Paper Co. Check out her latest collection of Black History Month cards that you can send all year round to inspire others with the words of famous Black trail blazers. Evann Webb of @damselindetroitblog Our very own Social Media Specialist here at Bloomscape is making waves outside of her 9-5. A writer, blogger, podcast host, and Detroit native, Evann’s introducing us to all the other women killing it in this city through her platform Damsels In Detroit. Irving Thomas of @indstryplantain.designs He’s a self-proclaimed “temporary quarantine artist” but we think he should stick with it. This Detroit-based artist created an awesome Prickly Pear animation for us that we’re still not over yet. (Also still waiting for this kind of sunshine!) Detroiters Feeding Us Angela Davis of @thekitchenista These snowy days call for comfort food, so try these deliciously easy recipes from Angela Davis of The Kitchenista Diaries, a self-taught cook, blogger, food photographer, and mom of two. Lauren Gillon of @elle.thefoodie Better known as Elle, the Foodie, this Detroit native is cooking up viral-worthy meals on Homegirl Kitchen. And last year, she taught us how to bring self-care into the kitchen. Black History Month Continues Over the next few weeks, we'll be highlighting our Black employees at Bloomscape, sharing more illustrations created by Black artists, and have an awesome line up of Instagram Story takeovers and Planty Hour conversations for you all to enjoy.
