Garden color doesn't need to end when summer does.
Good news! There are plenty of perennials that are just beginning to shine at a time of year when the rest of your garden is packing up for the summer.
For shade: Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) - Sometimes known as Black snakeroot, this shade-loving perennial sports tall spires of tiny white flowers waving above beautiful green or chocolate brown foliage. Hardy in zones 3-8, Black cohosh makes a superb addition to a shady border or cottage garden.
For moist soils: Turtlehead (Chelone spp.) - With its white or rose-pink blooms shaped like, yes, an open-mouthed turtle, Turtlehead thrives in rich, moist soils. Plant them along streams, in rain gardens, or as part of a woodland border.
For dry, full sun: Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha) - Drought tolerant, with billowy grey-green foliage and brilliant purple flowers, Mexican bush sage is the queen of rock gardens. Mexican bush sage is hardy in zones 9-11, and while it does not have the same flavorful leaves of culinary sage, it attracts plenty of hummingbirds and bees.
For poor soils: Coneflower (Echinacea spp.) - A true garden workhorse, Coneflower will tolerate the poorest of clay or rocky soils and still send up daisy-like blooms in neon shades of pink, orange, and yellow. Beginning mid-summer, Coneflower brings boatloads of butterflies to the garden, and its spiky seed cones provide winter interest and food for birds during the cold months.
No time like the present! Fall is an excellent time to plant new perennials and shrubs.
