We thought, you’d like to get to know the individuals behind your favourite wide calf boot company a little better.  This week we are going to introduce you to a very important person – Our Head of Design and Pattern making, Zefanjia.

 

Zefanjia, is one of a kind!  She studied fashion at college and before joining our manufacturing partners team she worked as a Cad Cam pattern designer for international women’s fashion brands.         

 

We asked Zefanjia to tell us what she loves most about her job, why she switched from fashion to footwear and of course that all important question – what is her favourite pair of wide calf boots and why?

 

“I love craftsmanship!  Coming from an industry where everything is technical and computerised, I was excited to be given the opportunity to learn a traditional set of skills.  With a history of almost 100 years in women’s footwear, I have been able to learn from some of the most highly skilled craftsmen.

 

Our last copies are drawn by hand which, enables us to design boots using our unique width fitting system – which is why we can produce so many width fittings.  Each pattern is graded by hand and then we work on the technical designs. So much work goes into our boots before we look at leathers and accessories!

 

As manufacturing moved to CAD design much of the traditional craftsmanship has been lost to our industry. But, alongside my work as a designer and pattern maker I also lecture at a fashion college and teach my students all that I have been privileged to learn so these skills are not lost forever.  In fact, there is a resurgence in the industry as manufacturers begin to understand that one size does not fit all – this is exciting.

 

My favourite pair of boots are The Cheddar Boots, in Ocean Blue.  I wear a Wide Calf boot, as I walk a lot and have developed calves and I need my footwear to have a wide foot width so I can wear my orthotics.  Without them I experience extreme pain when walking.  It is very important to me that women, who like me, have problem feet have as much choice when it comes to buying footwear as available to those able to fit into the industry standard.  We are all unique and while we may not all be able to afford custom made boots – these are the closest to them.

 

We are also working on a range of wide fitting ankle boots so I am excited to see them.”
