Return to Performance Through Data-Led Training

In overseeing the performance of your athletes, are you for or against the thought of involving data? It's a question that many people in the baseball industry face.

    • Is more data useful data?

    • How do I know what data is the right data to go by in working with my athletes?

    • Do I have enough staff to collect information that I can use to determine where to make changes in my training and throwing programs?

    • Do I personally have time to review the data?

    • Do I understand how to communicate the data to my staff and players?

We all have the same questions.

    The Role of Evidence-Based Performance

Evidence-based Performance means that a coach or clinician utilizes both evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence.  To be highly effective, you cannot advance performance with one over the other.

Evidence-Based practice means that you deliver programming based on previous work published on a similar athlete population. If the published data shows a significant difference with large effects, you will likely see improvement for the general population of your athletes, given that they are at the same level of play or age.

However, Practice-Based Evidence is needed to fill in gaps in evidence-based practice. This refers to coaching or clinical experience (knowledge of what works and what has failed in the past), intuition, new equipment integration, new data that has not been made public, and internal approaches to your organization, facility, or team.

Many consider this approach subjective versus an evidence-based approach which is primarily objective. Essentially, high-level coaches and clinicians can utilize both methods that create the greatest benefits to their athletes and put their strategies under scientific scrutiny to deliver the best possible coaching and training.

    Evidence-Based Performance in Practice

This week's podcast features Luke Novosel, Minor League Co-Rehabilitation Coordinator with the New York Mets.

Luke has many specializations. He is a physical therapist, athletic trainer, and strength and conditioning coach. Throughout all his specialties, Luke can blend external and internal evidence in making the right decisions with his athletes.

Given that he works with athletes who have sustained a previous injury, there is no room for failure, as a second injury could be the kiss of death for an athlete's career.

Luke goes over some of his success secrets since being in professional baseball. His overarching theme to advance an athlete's return to performance is an Evidence-Based Performance process.
