Dried mealworms are a recommended food to feed from now on as they are a great protein source, and are a popular food for both adult and young chicks.

Bird of the Month - Chaffinch

Our Bird of the Month for March is the beautiful Chaffinch.

The Chaffinch is among the most popular spring songsters and is arguably the most colourful of the finches. Its patterned overcoat helps it to blend in when feeding on the ground and it becomes most obvious when it flies, revealing a flash of white on the wings and white outer tail feathers.

    Male Chaffinch

    Female Chaffinch

The Chaffinch is one of the most widespread and abundant birds in Britain and Ireland. In the UK we have approximately 6.2 million breeding pairs, and you'll usually hear them before you see them, with their loud and varied calls.

Chaffinches will feed on a variety of insects and seed mixes. They are usually known for being ground feeders, however it's not uncommon for them to feed from tube feeders, especially those with our perching rings.

This species tend to build their own nest in bushes or low trees, it is unlikely that they will use a nest box. They will lay between 4-5 dark spotted greenish eggs, and chicks will fledge from around 13 days old.

Fun Fact - Chaffinches have regional accents, with slight differences in song between birds from different areas.
