Today is the last day to take part in the 2021 Big Garden Birdwatch, and if you've not yet done so, it's really easy to take part. Just follow the 3 simple steps...
1. Pick an hour when you can sit and watch your birds. 2. Count the birds you see from your garden or balcony. Don't count any that are in flight. To avoid double-counting, just record the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not a running total. 3. Submit your results - you can do so online on the RSPB website or via post from 29th January up until 19th February.
To give you a helping hand we have put together a Big Garden Birdwatch guide on our website, click the green button below to read more. You can also find out more about the Big Garden Birdwatch visit the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch website here >
And most importantly we hope you all have fun and enjoy taking part in this fantastic event! Remember to let us know how you get on through our social channels. |

| Results of the 2020 Survey |
Last year was the largest ever Big Garden Birdwatch event with the public counting close to 8 million birds during the weekend! This staggering result was due to nearly half a million people getting involved and submitting their counts.
THE 2020 UK TOP TEN |
4. Woodpigeon 5. Blackbird 6. Goldfinch 7. Great Tit 8. Robin 9. Long-tailed Tit 10. Magpie |
The results from last years count show 7 non-movers in the top ten birds for the UK. Podium positions remained the same as 2019 with the House Sparrow, Starling and Blue Tit at the top. Whilst they may continue to be the most common sighted birds, House Sparrow and Starling populations have declined 53% and 80% respectively since the Birdwatch began in 1979. Next came in the Woodpigeon and Blackbird who switched places with the Blackbird showing a 46% decline in numbers since the first survey; and then three non-movers in the Goldfinch, Great Tit and our favourite Robin, who is also 32% down over the same period.
A returnee to the top ten, and a cute one at that, is the tiny Long-tailed Tit who jumped in at number 9 ousting the Chaffinch completely. These two have a long running battle for getting, and staying, on the list. The final spot was stolen by the Magpie just like the previous year.
We can't wait to find out what the results of the 2021 will be! Do you have any predications for this year? Share them with us on our social media channels. |
