| COP27 is the annual UN conference on climate change, intended to bring together world leaders to discuss and find solutions to the need to keep the global temperature from rising to dangerous levels. While it's undoubtedly important for the world to engage with the issues, there have been criticisms of this year's meeting.
Criticism has ranged from the host country's record on human rights, to the morality of serving bottomless cocktails in the middle of an event where such serious issues might require a clear head, via the legitimate concern that those who are likely to be most impacted by climate change are not being included in discussions.

| Where does Fairtrade come into this?
| | | |
|
| Fairtrade International represents some 1.9 million farmers worldwide who see first hand the devastating impact of climate change. Extreme weather events that destroy crops or lower yields are destroying the livelihoods of farmers in low and middle income countries, but the farmers themselves, with their unique insight into the problems they are facing, are currently excluded from discussions about how any funds committed by higher income countries might be spent. If we are to build resilience into agriculture in the coming years, this has to change. Fast.

| Fairtrade has always been about the environment
| | | |
|
| Rigorous Fairtrade Standards support farmers to protect the environment. They uphold environmental standards promoting best agricultural practices that are sustainable, minimise risks and protect biodiversity. This has been central to People Tree's mission since we were founded 31 years ago.
People Tree only ever work with organic cotton and natural or biodegradable fibres, ensuring there are no chemicals or hazardous pesticides; making your garments kinder on skin, but also preventing soil degradation and unsafe working conditions for our farmers. This isn't out of charity, but about taking responsibility for our impact on the world.
There is a better way to do business, which is why we join with Fairtrade International in calling on world leaders to support fair and equitable labour in production, and to include farmers in finding the solutions our planet so desperately needs.
