| | Creative Handicrafts is a social enterprise based in Mumbai that works to empower disadvantaged women of the slum communities through economic independence. Over the last 30 years, Creative Handicrafts has evolved into a Fair Trade Organisation with a view to changing the world one woman at a time. | Beula Jose grew up in a small village in Kerala. She got married at the age of 21 to a man working in the city of Mumbai and shifted to Mumbai with her husband. Financial constraints at home pushed her out of her house in search of work. She joined a garment company for quality checking work. She worked 12 hours a day and had to stand all day. She was overworked and underpaid. A neighbour seeing her distress told her about Creative Handicrafts.
She left her job and joined Creative Handicrafts training centre and soon became a good tailor and joined the co-operative of Creative Handicrafts. After joining Creative Handicrafts, Beula felt that she was enjoying her work and saw that people cared for her and realised that Creative Handicrafts was not only a place to become financially independent but she also found a support system among women who would stand with her through good and bad times.
After a few years, she showed all round growth and was promoted to being in charge of a tailoring cooperative. This meant that she would have to manage a group of 20 to 25 women potentially from difficult backgrounds and it was her responsibility to train them with the skills and strength to become independent.
With her hard earned money and support from the organisation she sent both her children to good schools. Beula knew that if they got the education that she never got, they would have a prosperous future. Beula is a living example of the strength of a woman and she thanks Creative Handicrafts for making her the person she is today. | | | |

| | Kumbeshwar Technical School (KTS) is an educational and vocational training centre based in Kathmandu, Nepal. KTS employs over 2,000 artisans who produce a collection of hand knitted and embroidered cardigans, jumpers, hats, gloves and scarves for People Tree. Artisans are mostly women who work part time for People Tree and can look after their children at the same time. | | | |

| As a Fair Trade brand, it is very important to us that the discounts you receive do not affect our producers and their wages or livelihood, instead these sales affect our margin.
By doing sales, we generate extra revenue, which we invest in our producers so they can begin work on our next collection. Ethical, sustainable fashion is an expensive business but the boost in sales generates the resources we need to place new orders – and keep our business going.
We have tailored payment plans with our producer partners and for those artisans that need access to working capital to buy materials. | | | |
