• ☠️How to Avoid these 4 Common Pillow Toxins

🚩Are these toxins in your pillow??

4 Concerning Chemicals Lurking in Synthetic Pillows

You spend about a third of your hours every day with your pillow. It’s the closest thing to your nose 👃 and mouth 👄– where all your breathing happens while you sleep. 💤

The unfortunate part about this is that your pillow may contain microscopic toxins that can travel into your breathing pathways and cause all sorts of problems!

Here we’ll talk about 4 toxins commonly found in conventional pillows that you won’t find in a GOTS certified pillow:

    Flame-Retardants

With their ability to mold to each individual’s unique body shape, foam pillows have become a popular choice in recent years. The problem, however, is that foam is often primarily made from polyurethane. Polyurethane is a flame retardant that emits PBDEs, which are known for being hormone disruptors. Another danger connected to these compounds is the fact that they aren’t biodegradable.

The good news is, you won’t find any of these in a GOTS Certified organic pillow. (At least the ones you’ll find at White Lotus Home, we really can not vouch for others….)

    Formaldehyde

Synthetic foams used in conventional pillows may contain formaldehyde, which can cause concerning symptoms like coughing, watery eyes, nausea, wheezing, skin irritation, and a burning feeling in the nose or throat. The U.S. National Toxicology Program has even described formaldehyde as “known to be a human carcinogen.”

When you go GOTS, you’ll be sure to avoid this common pillow toxin.

    Deodorizers and Perfumes

As if these toxins aren’t enough, sometimes manufacturers of foam pillows use industrial strength deodorizers and perfumes to mask the chemical odors coming from the foam. Yikes!! Although these fragrances are designed to smell pleasant, they’re likely composed of synthetic scents that add another level of risk to an already toxic pillow.

But don’t worry, you can dodge all of these by choosing a WLH GOTS certified pillow.

    Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

The word “volatile” is in VOCs for a reason, and it’s because these substances are unstable. VOCs are known for breaking up and forming toxic gasses, and synthetic pillows sometimes emit them into the air. Common effects of exposure to VOCs can be irritation to your eyes and nose, asthma attacks, and possible damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.

Reducing your exposure to VOCs will only be beneficial to your health, and you can do that by sleeping on an organic pillow.
