    WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN

    Choosing Your Firewood Supplier

Trying to purchase logs for your woodburner or open fire can be a minefield and there are several considerations which will affect your choice. We're here to make that choice just that bit easier for you and to offer some insight into the factors you'll need to consider when scouring the internet for the perfect firewood supplier whether you're purchasing from Certainly Wood or somewhere else.

TIP 1 - CONSIDER THE SPECIES

Species like ash, oak and beech are commonly used as firewood because the high-density properties allow the wood to burn more slowly and produce a higher level of heat output compared to softwoods. But please be aware that silver birch, even though it is a hardwood, will burn about 20%-30% quicker than other hardwood species. You can find more information here.
At Certainly Wood, we only supply mixed British hardwoods across all of our firewood range, so you can be assured that you are getting high heat output with every log.

TIP 2 - IS IT LOCALLY SOURCED?

The majority of the wood sold in Britain is sourced from Eastern Europe as it tends to be cheaper than timber grown in the UK. In 2022, however, British grown timber became more competitive against imported firewood due to various factors, one of course being the war in Ukraine.
We only source our timber from within 100 miles of our base in Herefordshire and hence carry the Grown In Britain badge.
We are increasingly having to consider the "log miles" with our purchases. Due to high levels of British woodland management, purchasing British firewood will mean that you are in turn contributing to the conservation and increase of our forested areas in the UK, and you are also reducing the emissions caused by transportation, as well as preventing any unwanted diseases from getting through our borders. Make sure you ask your supplier about the source of their firewood.

TIP 3 - IS IT READY TO BURN APPROVED?

Certainly Wood was one of the  founding members of the Ready to Burn scheme and we have been providing quality assured kiln-dried firewood below 20% moisture content for many years. But why is it important for your supplier to be compliant? As of May 2021, it became law that wood sold in volumes less than 2m3 was Ready to Burn certified. This law was introduced with the aim to reduce particulate emissions caused by burning wet wood.
All of our firewood & kindling are registered under the Ready to Burn scheme so you can be confident in knowing that you are getting a clean burn with maximum heat output every time. We are confident in the fact you will love our products, so we also offer a money-back guarantee when you purchase from us.

TIP 4 - IS IT RESPONSIBLY SOURCED?

In an era of heightened environmental awareness and sustainable living, responsible forestry has emerged as a crucial practice as it ensures:
    • Preservation of ecosystems & biodiversity
    • Mitigating climate change
    • Economic viability
    • Community welfare
