There was a rumor back in the day that Zinfandel could be the only indigenous California wine grape. Then came DNA testing of wine grapes...and it shattered all rumors, including Italian origins, and determined that the grape had Croatian origins. It came to America in the 1800s and along its way to the West Coast, it did very well in California, particularly in Lodi. It is fairly easy to spot a Lodi zin...fruit is expressive, full-bodied (understatement), and soft throughout. This version is a classic example and must be paired with bold dishes....but a simple red sauce pasta would also do!
