    It's National Cabernet Day

If any wine grape deserves its own National Day...it would have to be Cabernet Sauvignon.

As the noblest of noble red grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon produces some of the worlds most iconic wines.

Making its home all over the world, Cabernet Sauvignon's roots are in Bordeaux, France and particularly on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. In 1976, Steven Spurrier pitted Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons against their Bordeaux counterparts and Napa took home top honors thus pole vaulting California Cabernet into the limelight.

Bordeaux, France and Napa, California could be the most recognized and sought Cabernet based wines but other important Cabernet Sauvignon regions are Tuscany, Australia, Sonoma, Chile and Argentina, as well. There are many Eastern countries that grow and make Cabernet Sauvignon; Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovenia for example.

In that, Cabernet Sauvignon is a bit less expressive of its terroir than say Pinot Noir; there are expressive components of the terroir in wines grown throughout these great regions. Properly made Cabernet Sauvignon will express cassis, anis, dark chocolate, black cherry, leather, tobacco, herbs, and many other nuances based on the appellation.

To celebrate National Cabernet Sauvignon Day, I sought my favorite Napa and Sonoma Cabernets for your review. Whether you try one or try them all, each expresses the noble grape and from whence it is grown.
