    Some thoughts.

Wines of the west coast of the United States are arguably some of the most important wines in the world of wine. In 1976 when Chateau Montelena and Stags Leap Cellars beat the French in their wine tasting. Chateau Montelena topping the best white Burgundies and Stags Leap beating the finest Bordeaux. Though it took many years for the enthusiasm and intrigue of these two wins to hit the cash registers, the gauntlet had been thrown down and the wine world would never be the same.

Not only did this win set the bar for California wines, it inspired world wide vineyard development to grow grapes in what would otherwise be considered non-consequential grape growing areas. Though Washington and Oregon both had small wine making districts at the time of the Judgement of Paris, most of the wines to relegated to local consumption and restaurant. This is not longer the case.

I remember my first soirée into the wines of Washington State. They were at the hands of the first winemaking Master of Wine, David Lake. Huge wines that spoke directly of the terroir and quality. Of course, Washington boasts the same latitude as Bordeaux, France thus explaining the area's affinity towards Bordeaux varietals. The wines of Washington are extremely important to the world of American wine.

In 1989, I visited the Oregon wine country in attending the Oregon Pinot Noir Festival. It was only the second year of its inception and at that time, the Pinot Noirs from Oregon were struggling at best...some just down right awful. But the fesitval brought Pinot Noir wine makers and enthusiasts together to discuss, share, and elevate the Oregon wine districts. And that they did. Now, wines from that area are not only incredibly representative of their origin, many international brands have opted into establishing wineries there thus creating international enthusiasm for the appellation.

I thought it was time to showcase wines of the Pacific states; California, Washington and Oregon, in a club all their own. I taste hundreds of examples each month and always felt that they would make a synergistic club if we could focus on good examples (meaning representative of the area) at a fair price.

I introduce the newest of clubs here at the Original Wine of the Month Club....the Pacific series.
