In 1990 Morley Safer announced on 60 Minutes the idea behind the French Paradox. The paradox being that the French outlive Americans even though they do not exercise, smoke a ton, and eat goose liver fat (Foie Gras).
Among many factors such as consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking with olive oil, and taking meals slower, red wine consumption was a major indicator of clearer arteries. Red wine antioxidants are the suspected reason for this "roto-rooter" of the blood system.
Tannat has long been touted as the wine grape with an abundance of "resveratrol" compared to its peers. Resveratrol is linked to antioxidant properties that help clear the arteries and is the reason some cardiologists recommend red wine or resveratrol supplements.*
